Profitable Glass Quarterly Fall 1999
Studio Profile
Leslie Perlis Studio
From art master to glass master, Leslie Perlis’ love of working with glass began with a lampworking class and was further energized through her work with Tom Augustine and her apprenticeship with Terry Corcoran. She has become known for her original creations fashioned from stained and fused glass. Two of the biggest reasons for her success may well be her trademark contemporary designs and the fact that she has developed good relationships with many people over the years.

Retailer Profile
Bearden Stained Glass
Darcie and Doug Bearden of Bearden Stained Glass have found success through standing behind their products. The business began with an emphasis on selling stained glass supplies and teaching classes, but it has grown to include Source One Lamp Bases, as well as well-constructed entry systems. Maintaining a high level of integrity with customers and paying attention to management basics have kept their customers coming back and spreading the word to others.

Management
What Makes a Good Manager?
Managers who don’t know how to delegate well are often the ones whose businesses end up failing. To be successful, managers need to find the best people, learn to trust them, and be aware of each employee’s strengths and weaknesses. It also helps to evaluate fairly, give praise when it is due, and encourage a team spirit.

Merchandising
Merchandising for Rave Reviews
Good merchandising encourages sales and sets the mood to buy. Such simple, but often overlooked, things as using appealing graphics, providing live demonstrations, controlling traffic patterns, providing color coding, and asking customers for their feedback can increase customer interest a thousand fold.
