Marguerite Beneke, an artist who works in the remote Karoo semidesert area of South Africa, likes to combine figurative and abstract images using collage techniques to construct bigger pieces from smaller ones. She fuses float glass and achieves color mainly with enamels with only a sparing use of stained glass.

Grit Theory in Cold Working Glass

Paul Tarlow shares guidelines for selecting appropriate grit sizes and sequences for cold working glass artwork. Not jumping in grit size more than double the current size and using at least one size of a course shaping grit, a medium grit, and a fine finishing grit will help to ensure more efficient work.

An Electric Experience in All Things Glass

During its 2018 annual conference, the Stained Glass Association of America celebrated the organization’s move to its new headquarters, an upgrade in computer and billing systems, and the installation of its new executive. The conference also included a wide range of classes and the presentation of the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award to Andrew Moor.

Terry Brett of the Pyramid Gallery in York, U.K., challenged members of the Contemporary Glass Society to create glass art with the atmosphere of winter. Judges narrowed the entries to a selection of 30. The winners’ creations will be on exhibit at the gallery from November 17, 2018, through January 14, 2019.

In 2015, Phil Vinson and Chuck Wells started Mobile Glassblowing Studios (MGBS) to produce economical portable glass furnaces for glassblowers of all levels. Since they introduced the first “Dragon” furnace, they have developed ways to retrofit the Dragon with veggie oil burners to make them more economical and environmentally friendly.
