With five decades of knowledge and invention behind him, Josh Simpson still manages to retain the joy of creating with glass. He is currently known for his Planets, which he creates in sizes from a few inches to large Megaplanets, and provides many of the smaller ones as treasures to be hidden in obscure places and discovered later.

Each year, Coatings By Sandberg sponsors a contest for glass artists to demonstrate the unique designs that can be created using dichroic glass. Artists from all over the world submitted stunning work that highlighted amazing skill and creativity and were rewarded with over $1,700 in gift certificates for CBS dichroic glass.

Every two years the Atelier d’Art du Verre hosts the Luxembourg International Festival of Glass, which began through the efforts of master stained glass restorers Robert Emeringer and Zaiga Baiza. The latest festival included outdoor glassblowing and sandcasting demonstrations as well as glass painting and many other techniques.

From its beginnings 25 years ago, the Contemporary Glass Society has grown into a thriving and proactive society supporting a membership of over 1,000. To highlight this anniversary, CGS is hosting a number of online and live exhibitions including a partnership with the Makers Guild in Wales to present FLOW, an exhibition featuring the work of 22 CGS members, with an emphasis on Welsh artists.

Filigrana, Clear Plate, and the Diamond Band Saw

New techniques and equipment can add a multitude of innovations to an artist’s creative vocabulary. Milon Townsend shares how using filigrana covered with thin clear plate glass can add flowing colored patterns to sculptural glasswork. Diamond band saws can also be used to split sculptures so they can be attached to both sides of flat glass to look like figures passing through the glass.
