International Flameworking Conference Continues to Inspire

Held each spring since 2001, the International Flameworking Conference (IFC) celebrates excellence in glass while hosting highly respected glass artists who offer insight, instruction, and inspiration. The 2012 conference featured Jay Musler, whose constantly evolving work now includes sculptures, bowls, panels, boats, and masks. He succeeded in offering encouraging words and live instruction to conference attendees.

The International Society of Glass Beadmakers (ISGB) held its 20th annual Gathering in July 2012 that included a special exhibit of the members’ work. For Indelible: A Collection of Personal narratives Expressed in Art Glass Beads, members translated their favorite sights and sounds from past Gatherings into wearable works of glass art.

Glassblower Leigh Taylor Wyatt and her business partner Shara Funari have organized their Austin, Texas, company into two entities. One is their for-profit studio, East Side Glass, a venture into using a solar-powered furnace to support a budding glass community. The other is the nonprofit Community Glass House, an outreach to disadvantaged youth, cancer patients, battered women, and others who can use glass art to strengthen their own creative, healing powers.

Fused glass artist, Donna Sarafis, adapts a watercolor style and sensibility honed from her years as a painter, quilter, and crafter to produce impressionistic glass landscapes, florals, and wild birds. Her use of colored frit on a glass background and a multilayered technique help to create saturated texture with superimposed cut-glass figures and added depth.

The Society of American Mosaic Artists (SAMA) is looking forward to the 2013 conference at the prestigious Museum of Glass: International Center for Contemporary Art in Tacoma, Washington. The annual summit provides educational events, mosaic art tours, networking opportunities, and presentations by some of the finest mosaic artists in the world. The keynote speaker will be Internationally renowned mosaic artist, Toyoharu Kii of Japan.

The SGAA 2012 Annual Summer Conference
The 103rd Annual Summer Conference of the Stained Glass Association of America (SGAA) featured preconference classes on traditional glass painting, painting with enamels, and sandblast etching, plus an address from keynote speaker Kathy Bradford. In addition, the Suppliers’ Showcase allowed artists, craftspeople, and studio owners the chance to meet with representatives of some of the major stained glass suppliers.
